At Adobe Animal Hospital of Soquel, when most people think of surgery for their pet, they usually think of ovariohysterectomy (spay) or neuter. Yes, these are probably the most common surgeries done on pets, but they are only a few examples of the procedures that we perform. We also take extreme care to ensure your pet’s surgery goes uneventfully.

Here are just a few ways in which we go above and beyond “expectations” for our surgical patients:

• We require blood work on all pets prior to anesthesia and surgery to ensure that we have all the information necessary to select the appropriate type and amount of anesthesia or to alert us to any possible complications that may arise due to an existing condition. We have often postponed or even canceled procedures because of findings on the lab testing.
• We place an IV catheter in each surgical patient to run fluids during the procedure to maintain normal blood pressure, prevent dehydration, or administer emergency medications if needed.
• A surgical nurse monitors each patient under anesthesia the entire time. We also have monitoring equipment attached to your pet to measure blood oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm, and ECG. Any changes in the parameters are responded to immediately to maintain a safe anesthetic experience.
• We have access to an on-call orthopedic surgeon who regularly performs surgery at our facility. He also has extensive experience with soft tissue procedures.
